Covering Letter
Think of yourself as a gift to the new employer and your covering letter as your presentation box or wrapping paper. Your covering letter gives you the opportunity to grab the employer's attention and make a positive first impression. You are aiming to intrigue and encourage the reader to find out more about you.
PLAN CAREFULLY
- Use one side of good quality, A4 white paper.
- Unless requested, a typed covering letter is now acceptable and will often look more professional than a handwritten letter.
- Use the same standard, easy-to-ready font on both your letter and CV.
- Include your own address and the employer's address at the top of the page.
- Address the letter to the person dealing with the application, if possible.
- The tone of your letter should match the tone of the advertisement and the job description for the vacancy.
- Let a positive, enthusiastic personality shine through.
LAYOUT
PARAGRAPH ONE

PARAGRAPH TWO
Show how your background, qualifications, interests or abilities link with the requirements of the company and the job description and say why you would like to work for the company.
PARAGRAPH THREE
Without repeating, summarise your relevant strengths. Let the employer know your availability for interview and your notice period, and end confidently that you look forward to meeting him/her.
Finally, check and double check for errors.
