During Interview

The interview is your chance to prove you are the right person for the job. You will be asked to talk about yourself, your background and your experience. You will also have the opportunity to find out as much information as possible about the company and the role you will be fulfilling.

The more relaxed you are, the more likely you are to convey confidence in your verbal and non-verbal communication.

GENERAL TIPS

  • Be professional and business like.
  • Smile; be friendly and relaxed but watch your posture.
  • Maintain good eye contact with the interviewer but don't stare. This will reflect your confidence and interest.
  • Don't talk too much, listen carefully and look for clues. Feedback from the interviewer is a valuable tool in framing your answers.
  • Don't be over-confident or try to over sell yourself.
  • Always be truthful and project honesty and sincerity.
  • Remain positive and strong when explaining changes or gaps in your career.
  • Never be negative or critical towards your previous or present employers.
  • Don't talk about your personal life or the internal affairs of your previous or current employers. If you politely refrain from answering such questions, this will reinforce your trustworthiness.
  • Never take books to an interview, particularly if they are on interviewing or job hunting.
  • If you are interested in the job, make sure you let the interviewer know before you leave by stating why you like the role.
  • Thank the interviewer for his/her time.
Occasionally, clients may surprise everyone and offer you the position at the first interview. If you are happy with the details, feel free to accept the offer. However, don't feel obliged to accept there and then if you feel uncomfortable. Thank them for the kind offer and let them know that you wish to think about it overnight.
